Bird photography beyond the basics

Build on your existing photography knowledge and skills through guided bird photography practice

A Snapshot of this Experience

Build on your existing photography knowledge and skills while refining your approach to photographing birds in the field. This small group bird photography walkabout is designed for photographers who already have a working understanding of their camera and foundational photography principles and would like to practise and refine their bird photography skills through guided field experience. Rather than revisiting foundational concepts in detail, the focus is on supported rehearsal and refinement. You’ll be guided as you respond to changing light, movement and behaviour, helping you make more confident and intentional decisions in real-world bird photography situations. As we move through bird-rich habitats, you’ll practise applying your existing knowledge to common scenarios such as perched birds, birds in flight and birds in challenging light conditions. There will be time to experiment, observe, ask questions and adjust your approach with gentle guidance throughout. The walkabout format allows learning to unfold naturally in the field, with opportunities to learn through repetition, observation and shared experience, while refining your skills and technique. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with valuable hands-on practice, clearer decision-making and greater confidence in continuing to develop your bird photography beyond the basics. •◊•◊•◊•◊•◊•◊•◊•◊•◊• DURATION: 4 hours, including a half-hour coffee break START TIME: 8.00am / FINISH TIME: 12.00 noon WHAT'S INCLUDED • Photography instruction in a small group setting • Bird photography hints and tips booklet to take home • Morning tea WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED • Transport to Dru Point • Lunch (available for purchase from the on-site Appelflap Cafe) GROUP SIZE Minimum 3 / Maximum 6 FAQ – who is this walkabout for? This walkabout is best suited to photographers who already have a working understanding of their camera and the foundations of photography, particularly exposure and related settings. These concepts may be briefly referenced during the session, but time is not spent explaining them in detail. The focus is on guided practice, rehearsal and refining your approach to bird photography in the field. If you’re newer to photography or would benefit from a slower introduction to camera settings and foundational concepts, our Bird photography for beginners workshop will be a better fit.
