What is a 'shutterbug'? How does 'walkabout' relate to your name? Our name, Shutterbug Walkabouts, perfectly reflects what we do and who we do it for. We chose this name by considering key definitions that align with our vision. A ‘shutterbug’ is commonly defined as someone who has a passion for photography. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a shutterbug is “a person who enjoys taking photographs and takes a lot of them, but who is not a professional photographer.” Wikipedia also describes a shutterbug as “an enthusiastic amateur photographer.” In essence, it’s about the joy of capturing images, regardless of whether or not photography is a profession. ‘Walkabout’ is defined as ‘a short period of wandering… as an occasional interruption of regular work' (Merriam-Webster). The idea of wandering and exploring resonates with our approach to photography experiences – inviting you to step away from routine, immerse yourself in nature, and capture moments of beauty along the way.

Do I need my own camera?Yes, you are required to bring your own camera gear and any lenses you wish to use. For optimum space and comfort, we suggest a maximum of four passengers. However, a group of six can travel, with the 5th and 6th passengers seated in the third row. Do you still offer experiences all-inclusive of meals and refreshments? We still provide refreshments during your experience. All other meals, however, will be arranged differently to before - according to the experience booked. When it comes to catering all meals, like full-spread picnic lunches and attentively prepared dinners, there has been a change in this aspect of our offerings. Unfortunately, we no longer cater in the same way that we have had so much success in doing so in the past. Let's shed a little light on why. The reason for this change lies in the increased costs associated with catering meals along with the administrative burden in maintaining the necessary food service permit for our micro-business. As a result, we’ve made adjustments to offer more flexibility while effectively managing costs. This change allows you to choose and pay for meals and refreshments according to your preferences. We’ll recommend our favourite Tasmanian producers to you... the local stores, cafes, and eateries, who are known for their variety of delicious meals, snacks, and refreshments, from whom we purchase from when catering for ourselves. With this change, you now have the freedom to choose and pay for meals and refreshments according to your preferences, giving you greater control over the choices made. Alternatively, depending on your booked experience, the option of dining in at a café or restaurant may be available.
-
Is there a minimum or maximum age requirement? We don’t impose a maximum age limit, as long as you are reasonably fit, mobile, and healthy. Majority of our guests are aged 30-75 years of age with some younger or older because it's all about the leisurely paced practical learning experience they desire, not about the age they are. Children aged 12-17 years are welcome on private experiences when accompanied and supervised by a parent or adult guardian and engaged with the slower pace photography aspect of the experience. Younger participants may find the experience and activities less suitable.
-
How do you handle my privacy? We handle your privacy with great care. For detailed information on how we protect and manage your personal data, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

Which lens should I bring? The best lens to bring is the one you use most often on your camera. With so many lenses available, it’s important to choose the one you’re most familiar with and comfortable using. This will help you maximise your experience and ensure you’re able to capture the best images. If you don't own a tripod or monopod, or not able to travel with yours, you are welcome to borrow one from us during your photography experience, without any additional fee. If you’ve never used a tripod or monopod before, this is a great opportunity to try it out – it might even be simpler than you think!

Can you tell me about the level of accommodation provided? We devote a lot of time to researching accommodation options for our multi-day tours and retreats. We even stay at selected places before proceeding with any tour bookings. Using a set of criteria and trusting our intuition, we continually update our knowledge of what’s available. This ensures we can offer a range of options with excellent feedback. The style of accommodation we typically book is boutique and photographer-friendly. It may include self-contained houses, cosy cabins, small hotels, or hosted bed and breakfasts. We also give you a say in the decision to ensure the accommodation aligns with your preferences. Our goal is to provide comfort, convenience, and a welcoming atmosphere where you can relax after a fulfilling day of photography. Many of the places we select are in scenic locations, enhancing both your stay and your photography journey. If you have specific requests or preferences, let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them.
-
What is the typical daily schedule? We plan our itineraries in advance, but our daily photo shoots and activities are adapted to make the most of the light, weather and varied photography opportunities, so nothing is set in stone. We much prefer to assess the day's conditions and change the agenda to suit to maximise your photo opportunities. Some days start early with a sunrise shoot, while other days may be focused on twilight, sunset, or night photography. We also make sure you have time at leisure to relax, take a nap, read a book, go for a walk, or review and process your photos. Depending on the itinerary, we may offer complementary experiences or activities to further enrich your travel and photography journey.
-
Is it possible photography birds and wildlife with a basic SLR lens kit or do I need some sort of telephoto lens?A lens with a focal length of 200mm or greater is an advantage mainly because it can often be difficult to get close to birds in their natural habitat. However, learning the camera settings and techniques for bird photography will get you started, so it's not essential to have all the 'perfect' gear. When covering topics related to bird photography, you'll spend most of the time experimenting with settings and techniques for bird photography using your camera and lens combo that you have now. It will also help you decide if bird photography is for you and whether investing in a new lens for this genre of photography is worth the investment.
